Hardware Systems Research Engineer

About this role

1X is seeking a Hardware Systems Research Engineer to prototype and evaluate novel hardware concepts for humanoid robots. You'll translate ideas into working systems, generate rigorous experimental evidence, and identify pathways for transitioning research into product-viable solutions.

What you'll do

• Rapidly prototype and test novel hardware concepts for humanoid robotic systems
• Generate experimental data to inform technical decisions and reduce uncertainty
• Establish performance benchmarks and systematically evaluate concepts against targets
• Identify limitations, tradeoffs, and scaling challenges of emerging technologies
• Transition promising research concepts into credible paths for product integration
• Move quickly from concept to working hardware while maintaining technical rigor

What they're looking for

• Hands-on mechanical, electrical, and software systems integration (10+ years)
• Electromechanical prototype design, fabrication, and validation
• CAD, machining, and rapid mechanical iteration
• Electronics design and custom PCB assembly
• Firmware, controls software, and test infrastructure development
• Experimental design and data analysis
• Evidence-driven problem solving and independent project ownership
• Interdisciplinary engineering across multiple domains
