Software Engineer II, Backend (Merchant & Partner Lifecycle)

About this role

Lead backend engineering efforts building a new lifecycle-orchestrator service for Affirm's merchant platform. You'll design scalable systems supporting hundreds of thousands of merchants while modernizing critical infrastructure and improving engineering practices across the organization.

What you'll do

• Design and expand the platform backbone to scale merchant operations globally
• Coordinate cross-team technical alignment and project delivery
• Execute technical strategy for complex, open-ended problems beyond the immediate team
• Build and launch backend systems using modern distributed architecture patterns
• Partner with engineering leadership to advance the team's long-term vision
• Enhance engineering standards, tooling, and development processes

What they're looking for

• Backend software engineering (3+ years)
• Domain-Driven Design and distributed systems architecture
• API design (HTTP and RPC), state machines, and event-driven architecture
• Kotlin, Java, Python, MySQL, and AWS
• Database design and data modeling
• Monitoring and alerting systems (Sentry, Rollbar, Kibana)
• Technical writing and asynchronous communication
• Kubernetes and gRPC
