Software Engineer - Data Engineering

About this role

Akuna Capital, a Chicago-based options market-maker, seeks a Software Engineer for its Data Engineering team to design and maintain large-scale data systems supporting trading and quantitative analysis. You'll build batch and streaming pipelines, mentor junior engineers, and ensure data reliability across the organization's hybrid cloud infrastructure.

What you'll do

• Design and expand data platform supporting streaming, operational, and research workflows across diverse data sources
• Build and deploy batch and streaming pipelines using Kubernetes, Kafka, and Databricks/Spark on AWS
• Collaborate with Trading, Quant, and Operations teams to identify data needs and deliver high-impact projects
• Create automated data validation test suites to ensure data quality and SLA compliance
• Mentor junior engineers on software and data engineering best practices
• Develop clean, well-tested, documented code for mission-critical applications

• Java/Scala (required); Python (preferred)
• Data platforms: Delta Lake, Spark, Kafka, ClickHouse, Presto/Trino
• AWS cloud development, deployment, and monitoring
• Kubernetes and container orchestration
• Batch and streaming pipeline design at scale
• Software engineering best practices (GitOps, CI/CD, Agile)
• Data quality and SLA management
