Mission Software Engineer - Undersea Reconnaissance & Strike

Washington, District of Columbia, United StatesFrom $220kmidAdded today

About this role

Join Anduril Maritime as a Mission Software Engineer focused on debugging and fixing real-world issues in autonomous underwater/surface vehicles. You'll investigate field anomalies, reproduce problems using logs and metrics, implement fixes across multiple languages, and build institutional knowledge that improves the entire system—starting with real impact from day one, not junior busywork.

What you'll do

  • Investigate field-reported anomalies in autonomous vehicles to identify root cause across subsystems
  • Reproduce issues using recorded sensor data, logs, and metrics instead of guessing or trial-and-error
  • Write fixes in the appropriate language (Rust, C++, Python, Go) with tests and proper CI/CD integration
  • Validate fixes in simulation and hardware-in-the-loop environments before deployment to real vehicles
  • Document root causes and create runbooks to prevent recurring issues and improve system observability
  • Escalate systemic problems to owning teams rather than applying surface-level patches

What they're looking for

  • Debugging unfamiliar code under time pressure with incomplete information
  • Proficiency in at least two of: Rust, modern C++, Python, Go
  • Systems debugging: log analysis, metrics interpretation, offline data reconstruction
  • Observability tools (Prometheus/Grafana, Loki/ELK or equivalent)
  • Linux and systems-level fluency
  • Clear technical writing and root cause analysis
  • Hardware and sensor integration familiarity
  • CI/CD and versioned deployment practices

Likely interview questions

  • Tell us about a time you debugged code you didn't write in a production or field environment—what made it hard and how did you solve it?
  • You've found a bug in a subsystem written in a language you're less familiar with. Walk us through your approach.
