About this role
Cyber Security Intern
Location: San Jose, CA
Employment type: U.S. internship
About the role
Astera Labs is looking for a Cyber Security Intern to join the Information Security organization and contribute to practical work that protects company systems, intellectual property, and customer data. This internship is designed for a student who wants hands-on exposure to security operations, vulnerability and access management, incident-response support, and secure operating practices in a growing technology company.
You will work with experienced security professionals and partner teams to investigate routine security signals, improve control coverage, document findings, and help move remediation work forward. The role combines technical learning with visible project work and opportunities to present outcomes to stakeholders.
What you’ll do
-
Support day-to-day security monitoring and triage by reviewing alerts, logs, endpoint-health signals, or other available security telemetry under established procedures.
-
Assist with scheduled vulnerability scans, access reviews, endpoint checks, control testing, and evidence gathering for audits or security reviews.
-
Document observations, investigation steps, remediation status, and follow-up actions clearly in team systems.
-
Help identify unpatched assets, anomalous behavior, policy gaps, or other issues and escalate them with relevant context.
-
Support incident-response activities, including initial reporting and triage, documentation, containment support, and recovery follow-up, under the guidance of experienced team members.
-
Partner with IT, Software Engineering, Legal, and business stakeholders to coordinate remediation tasks and communicate security requirements in a practical way.
-
Contribute to security awareness, cyber-hygiene, and secure-operating-practice activities that help protect Astera Labs’ systems and information.
-
Take ownership of a meaningful internship project and share your outcomes through an end-of-program presentation.
What you bring
-
Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD degree in cybersecurity, computer science, information systems, or a related technical field.
-
Foundational understanding of information-security concepts such as access control, vulnerabilities, security monitoring, risk, or incident response.
-
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with curiosity about how systems work and how they can be protected.
-
Ability to follow documented procedures, ask clarifying questions, maintain accurate records, and escalate issues appropriately.
-
Clear written and verbal communication skills and an interest in collaborating with both technical and non-technical partners.
-
Coursework, projects, labs, research, or prior experience related to cybersecurity or information technology is helpful, but we value demonstrated learning ability and sound judgment.
What you’ll learn
-
How an enterprise Information Security organization monitors systems, manages vulnerabilities and access, and supports incident response.
-
How security controls, risk priorities, policies, and operational processes work together to protect company and customer information.
-
How to collaborate with system owners and business partners to improve security while maintaining reliable day-to-day operations.
-
How to communicate technical findings clearly and turn investigation results into actionable remediation.
Internship experience and compensation
This is a paid, hourly U.S. internship. The applicable hourly rate is determined as part of the offer process and specified in the offer letter, depending on education level ranges form $35/hour to $55/hour. Interns participate in Early Career programming, including technical and professional-development sessions, community events, and an end-of-program project presentation.
