About this role
Axon seeks a Mechanical Engineer II to design and prototype mechanical systems for early-stage hardware products on the New Ventures team. You'll balance rapid prototyping with manufacturable design, working hands-on to assess feasibility and production risk for innovative concepts that may transition to small-batch production.
What you'll do
- Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and enclosures for exploratory prototypes and small-batch products
- Create CAD models, drawings, and technical documentation supporting rapid iteration and manufacturing handoffs
- Select materials, manufacturing methods, and assembly approaches balancing speed, cost, durability, and learning goals
- Build, test, and troubleshoot physical prototypes using hands-on fabrication and external vendors
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify production risks and design tradeoffs
- Document design decisions, test results, and manufacturing learnings to support team decision-making
What they're looking for
- CAD proficiency (parts, assemblies, tolerance-critical drawings)
- Mechanical design fundamentals (tolerances, materials, fastening, mechanisms)
- Design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly principles
- Hands-on prototyping and fabrication experience
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes (3D printing, CNC, sheet metal, injection molding)
- Design tradeoff evaluation and problem-solving
- Technical documentation and communication
- Integration of mechanical and electronic systems
