About this role

Axon seeks a Mechanical Engineer II to design and prototype mechanical systems for early-stage hardware products on the New Ventures team. You'll balance rapid prototyping with manufacturable design, working hands-on to assess feasibility and production risk for innovative concepts that may transition to small-batch production.

What you'll do

  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and enclosures for exploratory prototypes and small-batch products
  • Create CAD models, drawings, and technical documentation supporting rapid iteration and manufacturing handoffs
  • Select materials, manufacturing methods, and assembly approaches balancing speed, cost, durability, and learning goals
  • Build, test, and troubleshoot physical prototypes using hands-on fabrication and external vendors
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify production risks and design tradeoffs
  • Document design decisions, test results, and manufacturing learnings to support team decision-making

What they're looking for

  • CAD proficiency (parts, assemblies, tolerance-critical drawings)
  • Mechanical design fundamentals (tolerances, materials, fastening, mechanisms)
  • Design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly principles
  • Hands-on prototyping and fabrication experience
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes (3D printing, CNC, sheet metal, injection molding)
  • Design tradeoff evaluation and problem-solving
  • Technical documentation and communication
  • Integration of mechanical and electronic systems
