Embedded Systems Engineer (Medical Devices)
About this role
Mid-career embedded systems engineer needed to design and develop next-generation medical devices, bridging FPGA logic and Linux applications. You'll own the full stack from board schematics and Xilinx FPGA implementations to kernel drivers and high-level software, all within a regulated IEC 62304 / ISO 13485 framework.
What you'll do
- Design complex board-level schematics for FPGA-based medical devices, including power delivery, clock distribution, DDR interfaces, and analog signal conditioning
- Architect and implement custom FPGA IP blocks on Xilinx platforms communicating with user-space applications via AXI4 interconnects
- Develop and maintain Linux kernel drivers and user-space libraries bridging FPGA logic to C++/Rust/Python applications
- Participate in full product lifecycle including requirements, architectural design, FMEA, and verification testing under regulatory constraints
- Collaborate with PCB layout engineers on stack-up and routing; perform board bring-up, bench testing, and schematic debugging
- Optimize embedded systems for latency, throughput, power, and cost while ensuring patient safety

- Board-level schematic design (Altium Designer, KiCad)
- VHDL, Verilog, or SystemVerilog for synthesis and simulation
- Embedded Linux (Yocto, PetaLinux, Buildroot) and kernel driver development
- C/C++ or Rust for firmware and driver development
- Python for scripting and automation
- Communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, high-speed serial)
- Power sequencing, high-speed signal integrity, and mixed-signal design
