About this role
About Branch
Branch is on a mission to make insurance more accessible, so more people can be covered. We innovate using data, tech, and automation to simplify insurance from start to finish—we eliminated inaccurate quotes in favor of real prices, created a better way to bundle, and cut unnecessary costs in the traditional insurance process. Then we pass those savings along to our members. Basically, we’re doing insurance the way it was meant to be.
But we didn’t just create the insurance we’ve always wanted, we also created the company we’ve always wanted to work for. As we redefine insurance, we also want to redefine what it means to work in insurance. Find out for yourself.
Branch has a preference for candidates in Ohio, but is open to candidates located in AZ, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MD, MI, MO, NV, NC, OH, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, and WI. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.
Branch is remote first, with most Branchers choosing to work from home. Our headquarters are located in Columbus, Ohio, where we come together from time to time to build relationships and connect with each other in real life. We also have office space in Columbia and Concordia, Missouri as well as Forreston, Illinois. Once a year, the entire company gathers for “BranchFest”, a highlight of the year for many Branchers.
About the Role
Branch is seeking a Vice President, Finance to lead how we plan for, measure, and understand the financial health of our business. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will lead three teams: financial planning and analysis, product finance, and business insights. Together, these teams give leaders across Branch the numbers and insight they need to make good decisions across all of our departments.
This is a senior leadership role. You will run the company's planning process from start to finish, own our long-term financial model, and be a trusted partner to the CFO, the executive team, and the leaders of the organization. You will turn company strategy into clear financial plans, bring a strong point of view on where we should invest, and build a team of managers who can grow with the company.
Key Responsibilities
Set the direction for the FP&A, product finance, and business insights teams, and make sure their work fits together and supports company goals.
Run the company's annual plan and long-range financial model from start to finish, including how the process works, what goes into it, and the timeline, with final approval from the CFO.
Oversee forecasting, budget tracking, and variance analysis across all departments, including claims, production, and underwriting, and explain clearly what is driving results and what needs attention.
Present financial results, forecasts, and recommendations to the executive and leadership teams, and give input that shapes company strategy and major investment decisions.
Lead strategic finance work, including business cases, unit economics, growth and pricing analysis, and scenario planning for key decisions.
Oversee business insights, setting standards for reporting, metrics, and data quality so leaders across the company work from one trusted set of numbers.
Create and roll out company-wide planning and budgeting practices, including how department leaders own and manage their budgets.
Spot trends and risks in our results and in the market that could affect our plans, and recommend changes early.
Partner closely with Accounting, Actuarial, Product, Sales, Claims, and Data leaders to connect financial plans to how the business actually runs.
Manage a team of 10 and develop managers and their teams, including hiring, performance, coaching, and building future leaders.
Improve planning and reporting tools and processes so the teams can scale as Branch grows.
Prepare board materials, investor presentations, and shareholder reporting in collaboration with the CFO.
Provide oversight for regulatory, statutory, and compliance financial reporting required for operating entities with the support of the Accounting Department.
Partner with the CFO and executive leadership in fundraising efforts.
Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
12+ years of experience in FP&A, strategic finance, or related finance roles, including 5+ years leading managers.
Experience in a startup or fast-growing organization, with the ability to lead change management as the business grows and scales.
Proven track record owning planning and forecasting for a business in property & casualty insurance, insurtech, or other highly regulated environments.
Deep knowledge of financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting, and unit economics.
Experience leading or working closely with a business intelligence or data team, and a clear understanding of how good data and reporting lead to better decisions.
Ability to turn complex numbers into a clear story and clear recommendations for executives.
Strong judgment and the ability to influence senior leaders, including holding a firm position with clear reasoning when final decisions sit with others.
Experience building, coaching, and growing teams of managers.
Comfortable working through ambiguity in a fast-growing company.
Advanced skills in Google Sheets, financial planning tools, and BI or reporting tools.
Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field. MBA a plus.
Strong understanding of insurance financial metrics, including loss ratios, expense ratios, and combined ratios.
Experience supporting board-level financial reporting, investor relations, and capital and treasury management.
