Prompt Engineer

About this role

Cantina Labs seeks a Prompt Engineer to design and refine the behavioral systems that power realistic AI characters on their social platform. You'll bridge research and product by crafting prompts, datasets, and evaluation frameworks that shape how AI personalities express themselves across multiple modalities, directly impacting millions of users' creative experiences.

What you'll do

• Author core behavior system prompts that define how AI bots express personality, emotion, dialect, and social dynamics
• Identify and prototype compelling personality traits through prompt engineering, iterating based on qualitative and quantitative feedback
• Create datasets and evaluation frameworks to measure bot performance, personality consistency, and interaction quality
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to translate creative vision into scalable prompt systems
• Track emerging bot behavior issues, prioritize improvements, and document prompting strategies and best practices
• Support ML training efforts by delivering meta-prompts for synthetic data pipelines and evaluating new model behaviors

What they're looking for

• Prompt engineering and LLM-based feature development (3+ years)
• Complex multi-step and system-level prompt design and iteration
• Deep LLM capabilities knowledge and intuition for input-behavior relationships
• Dataset creation and model output evaluation
• Psychology, sociology, or linguistics background related to personality and behavior
• Python familiarity and ability to navigate codebases
• Hypothesis-driven experimentation and independent problem-solving
• Technical and executive-level communication
