Design Engineer

About this role

Cartesia, an AI research company founded by Stanford PhDs, seeks a Design Engineer to build and maintain React design systems while perfecting the visual and interactive experience of their web products. You'll own everything from pixel-level polish to full feature implementation, driving both design quality and engineering excellence across the platform.

What you'll do

• Own the appearance and user experience of web-based surfaces with autonomy to proactively fix design and performance issues
• Design and implement UI features from scratch using React and TypeScript
• Develop and maintain a scalable React design system to accelerate product engineering velocity
• Ensure last-mile polish across interfaces, focusing on accessibility and web performance
• Build processes to identify gaps and opportunities in web surface design
• Work collaboratively with product and engineering teams to ship cutting-edge AI experiences

What they're looking for

• React and TypeScript (strong typing and maintainable code)
• Design system development and maintenance
• UI/UX design with pixel-perfect attention to detail
• Web performance optimization and React rendering optimization
• Accessibility standards and best practices
• Familiarity with component libraries (shadcn/ui, Radix Primitives, or Base UI)
• Ability to balance design aesthetics with engineering practicality
