About this role
The CDC Foundation seeks a skilled microservice developer to modernize Utah's Electronic Message Staging Area system using event-driven architecture. You'll design scalable APIs and data pipelines with Kafka and Kinesis to support public health reporting at scale.
What you'll do
- Design and develop high-performance microservices using Java SDK and GraphQL
- Modernize the EMSA technology stack to improve stability, scalability, and maintainability
- Increase system throughput to handle higher volumes during outbreak conditions
- Expand functionality to support clinical and case-based data beyond laboratory reporting
- Design and optimize PostgreSQL database structures for high-performance processing
- Collaborate with public health stakeholders using Agile methodologies

- Apache Kafka (3+ years hands-on experience)
- Amazon Kinesis (Data Streams, Firehose)
- Java SDK and Spring Boot
- GraphQL and RESTful API design
- PostgreSQL database design and optimization
