About this role
HRL Laboratories seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design, simulation, and analysis of advanced electro-mechanical hardware assemblies for infrared sensor systems used in aerospace and defense applications. You'll manage cross-functional teams through the complete product lifecycle while ensuring compliance with precision alignment, manufacturing standards, and customer requirements.
What you'll do
- Design, simulate, and conduct experimental analysis of electro-mechanical hardware assemblies
- Create and maintain engineering drawings with GD&T specifications and performance metrics
- Present design reviews and technical findings to customers and stakeholders
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and earned value metrics using IMS
- Lead teams from product inception through program closeout
- Monitor device performance and manufacturing process effectiveness using statistical process control
What they're looking for
- Mechanical design and CAD (SolidWorks)
- Precision alignment, chip interconnect, and adhesive bonding
- GD&T and technical drawing interpretation
- Knowledge of MIL, ASTM, ASME, AWS, IPC, and NASA standards
- Product review cycles (PDR, CDR, MRR, HAR)
- Thermal-mechanical analysis and FEA (COMSOL or Abaqus preferred)
- Project management and earned value tracking
- Infrared hardware design and cryogenics (preferred)
