About this role

HRL Laboratories seeks a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design, simulation, and analysis of advanced electro-mechanical hardware assemblies for infrared sensor systems used in aerospace and defense applications. You'll manage cross-functional teams through the complete product lifecycle while ensuring compliance with precision alignment, manufacturing standards, and customer requirements.

What you'll do

  • Design, simulate, and conduct experimental analysis of electro-mechanical hardware assemblies
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings with GD&T specifications and performance metrics
  • Present design reviews and technical findings to customers and stakeholders
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and earned value metrics using IMS
  • Lead teams from product inception through program closeout
  • Monitor device performance and manufacturing process effectiveness using statistical process control

What they're looking for

  • Mechanical design and CAD (SolidWorks)
  • Precision alignment, chip interconnect, and adhesive bonding
  • GD&T and technical drawing interpretation
  • Knowledge of MIL, ASTM, ASME, AWS, IPC, and NASA standards
  • Product review cycles (PDR, CDR, MRR, HAR)
  • Thermal-mechanical analysis and FEA (COMSOL or Abaqus preferred)
  • Project management and earned value tracking
  • Infrared hardware design and cryogenics (preferred)
