About this role
Field AI is seeking a Mechanical Engineering co-op student to design and develop mechanical systems for autonomous robotics hardware deployed in challenging real-world environments. You'll work on the full lifecycle from CAD design through production, collaborating with electrical and compute teams to create ruggedized, thermally-managed, and manufacturable solutions.
What you'll do
- Design mechanical structures, enclosures, sensor mounts, and chassis using CAD modeling and simulation
- Implement ingress protection solutions and thermal management strategies to ensure field reliability
- Conduct FEA and thermal simulations to validate designs; perform mechanical load testing and environmental validation
- Collaborate with electrical and systems engineers to integrate mechanical systems with sensing and compute platforms
- Support production by working with vendors, conducting QA checks, and investigating mechanical failures
- Develop mechanical documentation including drawings, GD&T annotations, BOMs, and manage weight/volume/thermal budgets
What they're looking for
- SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software
- FEA and thermal modeling/simulation
- Design for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA)
- Material and component selection
- Mechanical testing and debugging
- Vibration, shock, and environmental protection design
- Additive and subtractive manufacturing processes
- Systems integration and cross-functional collaboration
