About this role

Field AI seeks a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop ruggedized hardware payloads for autonomous robots operating in challenging real-world environments. You'll own the mechanical systems lifecycle—from CAD design through production and field support—collaborating with electrical and compute engineers to deliver reliable, integrated solutions.

What you'll do

  • Design mechanical structures, enclosures, sensor mounts, and chassis using CAD and simulation tools
  • Implement ingress protection, thermal management, and environmental hardening strategies
  • Conduct FEA, thermal analysis, and mechanical testing (vibration, shock, environmental exposure)
  • Develop designs for manufacturing (DFM/DFA) and manage weight, volume, and thermal budgets
  • Support production, quality assurance, and vendor coordination for payload integration
  • Debug mechanical failures and field issues; develop monitoring protocols for system health

What they're looking for

  • SolidWorks or equivalent mechanical CAD
  • FEA and thermal simulation
  • Mechanical design for harsh environments (vibration, thermal cycling, water/dust ingress)
  • Manufacturing processes (CNC, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, assembly)
  • Mechanical systems integration and cross-functional collaboration
  • Mechanical testing and lab debugging
  • GD&T, documentation, and BOM management
  • Robotics systems fundamentals
