About this role
Figure, an AI robotics company, seeks a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to design and prototype thermal solutions that minimize noise and enhance reliability in humanoid robot systems. The role involves rapid iteration of cooling components, comprehensive testing, and instrumentation to advance silent thermal technology for robotics.
What you'll do
- Design and iterate 3D CAD models of thermal components including heat sinks, cold plates, fans, and cooling structures
- Build physical prototypes using FDM/SLA printing, CNC machining, sheet metal, and rapid mockup techniques
- Conduct experiments characterizing thermal loads and noise sources across motors, gearboxes, electronics, and actuators
- Instrument prototypes with thermocouples, microphones, accelerometers, and data acquisition hardware for testing
- Perform thermal benchtop testing, acoustic measurements, and flow visualization using smoke tests and IR thermography
- Optimize fan selection and system impedance to achieve minimal acoustic signature
What they're looking for
- 3D CAD modeling and design
- Thermal and acoustic testing methodologies
- Prototype fabrication (FDM, SLA, CNC, sheet metal)
- CFD and FEA simulation tools
- Data acquisition and instrumentation
- Thermal component design (fans, heat sinks, interface materials)
- Experimental design and documentation
- Heat transfer and fluid dynamics fundamentals
Benefits
- Base salary: $120,000 - $180,000 annually
- Full-time position
- Additional compensation components available (details shared upon offer)
- Work on cutting-edge humanoid robotics technology
- Hands-on prototyping and testing environment
