Fuse Energy
Cryogenic Systems Engineer
About this role
Fuse seeks a Cryogenic Systems Engineer to design, commission, and operate dual cryogenic systems for Z-Star, a next-generation pulsed-power fusion facility. You will oversee high-vacuum cryopumping and 4K target cooling, serving as the facility's cryogenic expert while managing infrastructure, safety, and diagnostics.
What you'll do
- Design and commission multi-stage vacuum system with cryopumps, turbomolecular pumps, and control interlocks for the Z-Star chamber
- Develop and execute liquid-helium cryostat and transfer-line systems for target cooling at 4K
- Manage on-site liquid helium and nitrogen supply, storage, and transfer operations with vendor coordination
- Maintain preventive-maintenance programs for cryogenic hardware, compressors, and cold heads aligned with facility shot schedules
- Specify and integrate cryogenic instrumentation (temperature sensors, manometers, RGA) into facility control and interlock systems
- Author and enforce cryogenic safety procedures including ODH assessments, ASME pressure-vessel compliance, and emergency training
What they're looking for
- Cryogenic system design and operation at liquid-helium temperatures (4K)
- Vacuum science and technology (pumping speed, conductance, leak detection, RGA)
- Cryopump sizing, installation, and regeneration cycles
- Liquid-helium dewars, cryostats, and vacuum-jacketed transfer-line design
- Cryogenic instrumentation and thermometry (Cernox, PT-100, capacitance manometers)
- ASME/CSA pressure-vessel standards and compliance
- Preventive maintenance and facility operations planning
- Safety procedures and ODH assessments
