Automation Engineer, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

Los Angeles, CAfulltimemidAdded 1 month ago

About this role

Hadrian seeks an Automation Engineer to design and deploy end-to-end automated NDT inspection systems across multiple modalities (UT, VT, RT, CT) for aerospace and defense manufacturing. You'll own the complete automation stack from robot paths and sensor integration through production commissioning, partnering with NDT and Quality teams to validate methods and ensure data traceability.

What you'll do

  • Design and deploy automated inspection cells for ultrasonic, visual, radiographic, and computed tomography testing methods
  • Own full automation stack including robot/motion paths, sensor integration, sequencing, HMI, data logging, and production handoff
  • Plan inspection paths balancing coverage, cycle time, kinematics, and collision risk
  • Integrate modality-specific hardware and partner with certified NDT personnel on method validation
  • Build inspection data pipelines for SPC, traceability, and customer delivery
  • Commission on floor, debug production issues, and establish reusable inspection automation patterns

What they're looking for

  • Automated NDT system design and commissioning (3+ years)
  • Robot/motion control systems (Fanuc, ABB, Kuka, Yaskawa, or similar)
  • Advanced NDT modalities: phased-array UT, vision inspection, digital radiography, or CT
  • Industrial controls and PLC programming (Beckhoff TwinCAT, Siemens TIA, or equivalent)
  • Measurement systems analysis, POD/ROC, and acceptance criteria definition
  • Mechanical and electrical system troubleshooting
  • Safety and regulatory compliance (LOTO, radiation, EHS)
  • Data pipeline and production workflow integration

Likely interview questions

  • Walk us through an automated NDT inspection system you personally designed or commissioned—what modality, what was your specific ownership end-to-end, and what broke first when it hit production?
  • Describe your experience integrating a specific NDT sensor or acquisition system (phased-array UT, digital radiography, vision, or CT) with robot motion and sequencing. How did you handle timing, triggering, and data logging?
