Software Engineering Intern

About this role

Instead is an AI-powered tax software platform seeking Software Engineering Interns to build production features used by accounting firms. You'll work on a full-stack platform combining frontend, backend, and AI components alongside experienced engineers in San Francisco.

What you'll do

• Develop and ship end-to-end product features on the live customer platform
• Build AI-powered components including inference pipelines and prompt engineering
• Debug issues and implement improvements based on customer feedback
• Contribute across frontend (Vue/Nuxt), backend (Go), and AI layers
• Participate in code reviews and architecture discussions
• Create internal tools to enhance team productivity

What they're looking for

• Strong programming fundamentals and clean code practices
• Web development (frontend or backend with modern frameworks)
• TypeScript, Vue, Nuxt, or Go
• Debugging and problem-solving abilities
• AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot)
• Attention to detail and ability to ship products
• Fast learning and self-motivation
• Understanding of end-user needs and product thinking
