About the Role:

Ooma is looking for a Director, Infrastructure Engineering to lead the organization responsible for the infrastructure Ooma's customers depend on: data centers, public cloud, Linux server fleets, Kubernetes clusters, networking, ISP relationships, network storage, logging and monitoring infrastructure, network security, compliance, and more.

Your core mandate is to run a high-performing infrastructure organization of 12 engineers—developing team leads, driving operational excellence and reliability, owning capital and operating budgets, and continuously finding opportunities to optimize cost, vendor spend, and efficiency—all while serving as a trusted infrastructure partner to peer teams in Network Operations and to Engineering. As the company grows, you'll modernize the technology stack and scale the team and its practices to match.

If you're an infrastructure leader who is technically credible with strong individual contributors, operationally rigorous, and polished enough to present strategy to executives, this role was written for you.

What You’ll Do:

  • Build and run a high-performing, distributed infrastructure organization of ~12 engineers, driving operational excellence, reliability, and accountability across all infrastructure services.
  • Manage capital and operating budgets, own vendor relationships and contract negotiations, and continuously identify opportunities to reduce cost without compromising reliability.
  • Set technical direction across data centers, cloud environments, Linux, Kubernetes, networking, storage, observability (logging and monitoring), and network security. Bring the technical depth to earn the respect of strong individual contributors and make sound architectural trade-offs.
  • Operate as a service provider to sibling teams within Network Operations, building and maintaining the hardware platforms on which they deploy and upgrade Ooma's products and services.
  • Collaborate with Product and Development teams to define, architect, and document infrastructure solutions for upcoming products and services, bringing infrastructure into the design conversation early — including SLAs, performance targets, scalability, and capacity planning.
  • Establish and develop team leads, build a leadership bench, and evolve the team structure over time toward functional domains as the unified organization matures.
  • Partner with Security and broader organizational leadership to define security policies and standards for data center and cloud infrastructure and lead the implementation and enforcement of those policies across all environments—including security patch and operating system upgrade cadences, and partnering with audit and compliance teams (e.g., SOX, SOC).
  • Build strategic plans, roadmaps, and presentations for executive leadership that connect infrastructure investment to business outcomes.
  • Own the 24/7/365 on-call escalation path. Build an escalation model and on-call program where you're accountable for outcomes—without needing to personally join every incident bridge.
  • Champion automation, standardization, and modern infrastructure practices so the organization scales with the company's growth.
  • Bring a point of view on where AI can meaningfully improve infrastructure operations and engineering efficiency, and help the organization explore and adopt it thoughtfully.
  • Represent infrastructure externally with customers and partners as needed and serve as the infrastructure integration lead for future acquisitions.
  • Operate within a genuinely flexible work model—fully remote within the US, hybrid, or onsite at our Sunnyvale, CA headquarters, your choice—aligned with the organization's US business hours, with occasional travel as needed.

Experience We’re Looking For:

  • 10+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering or operations required, including 5+ years leading teams—ideally including experience leading through team leads or managers.
  • Must have deep technical fluency across the domains this organization runs: Linux, Kubernetes, and open-source tooling; cloud infrastructure and environments; and core disciplines including data center operations, networking, storage, observability, and network security.
  • A track record of owning capital and operating budgets, managing vendors, and negotiating contracts is essential.
  • Experience leading teams through a merger integration, org consolidation, or other significant structural change highly valued.
  • A background in telecom, VoIP, or other carrier-grade / high-availability service environments strongly preferred.
  • A demonstrated track record of measurable infrastructure cost optimization a plus. #LI-CC1
