Android Engineer, ChatGPT Mobile Infrastructure

About this role

OpenAI is seeking a Staff+ Android Engineer to build and maintain the Kotlin-based infrastructure powering ChatGPT and other AI applications. You'll focus on platform-level challenges including performance optimization, CI/build systems, and developer tooling to enable faster iteration across multiple high-impact Android apps.

What you'll do

• Design and evolve core Kotlin frameworks for caching, state management, navigation, and component systems
• Optimize app performance across startup time, responsiveness, memory, and battery life
• Improve reliability by reducing crashes and enhancing error handling and release processes
• Partner with product teams to identify infrastructure gaps and prioritize solutions
• Develop internal tooling, CI automation, and testing systems to accelerate engineering velocity
• Create intuitive APIs and safe defaults that simplify adoption across teams
