Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE), Healthcare - Seattle
About this role
OpenAI seeks a Forward Deployed Engineer to lead end-to-end AI system deployments within healthcare organizations, managing technical discovery through production launch. You'll design and implement AI applications integrated with healthcare infrastructure while ensuring compliance with HIPAA, privacy, and regulatory requirements, collaborating with customers and internal teams to translate complex workflows into measurable business outcomes.
What you'll do
- Own technical solutions from customer discovery and architecture through implementation, evaluation, deployment, adoption, and handoff
- Partner with customer engineers and domain experts to translate healthcare workflows into technical requirements and measurable outcomes
- Design and implement production AI applications and agentic systems integrating with EHRs, claims systems, and enterprise APIs
- Build systems with appropriate safeguards for PHI, HIPAA compliance, security, authorization, and auditability
- Define and operationalize evaluations, validation workflows, and launch criteria against customer-specific acceptance thresholds
- Distill deployment learnings into reference architectures, integration patterns, and reusable technical primitives for regulated environments

- Software engineering and ML/AI engineering with 6+ years experience
- Technical leadership and decision-making in ambiguous, complex environments
- Healthcare domain knowledge (payer workflows, provider operations, EHR systems, HL7, FHIR, Epic)
- Cloud infrastructure and enterprise API integration
- AI evaluation, safety, privacy, security, and governance
- Customer-facing deployment and technical consulting experience
- HIPAA and regulated enterprise compliance
- Observability, error analysis, and system reliability optimization
