About this role
OpenAI seeks a Forward Deployed Engineer to embed with legal customers, prototype AI-powered solutions for law firms, and scale successful deployments into repeatable patterns. You'll own technical delivery from discovery through production while translating legal workflows into product feedback that shapes the platform.
What you'll do
- Embed with law firms to understand workflows, identify high-value opportunities, and select initial use cases
- Build full-stack AI systems that deliver measurable value and inform product learning
- Guide customer adoption of deployed solutions and manage trade-offs between scope, speed, and quality
- Contribute directly to code when necessary to unblock progress or clarify technical direction
- Codify successful patterns into reusable tools, playbooks, and building blocks
- Provide field feedback to Research and Product teams on model performance and improvement areas
What they're looking for
- 5+ years software or ML engineering with customer-facing ownership in regulated industries
- Full-stack development in Python, JavaScript, or equivalent backend/frontend stacks
- Experience deploying LLM or generative AI systems with guardrails and evaluation frameworks
- Systems thinking and incident response with focus on repeatable improvement patterns
- Clear communication across engineering, product, compliance, risk, and executive stakeholders
- Legal technology, compliance workflows, or professional services domain knowledge (helpful but not required)
- End-to-end ownership of complex AI systems in high-consequence environments
- Composure under urgent, ambiguous, high-stakes delivery pressure
