iOS Engineer, ChatGPT Mobile Infrastructure

About this role

OpenAI is seeking a Staff+ iOS Engineer to build and maintain the core Swift platform infrastructure supporting multiple apps including ChatGPT. You'll focus on developer productivity, performance optimization, and reliability while collaborating with product teams across San Francisco, New York, and Seattle.

What you'll do

• Design and evolve foundational Swift frameworks (caching, state management, observability, navigation) used across multiple applications
• Optimize app performance through profiling and implementing architecture patterns for startup time, memory, and battery efficiency
• Reduce crashes and improve reliability through systematic error handling and release process improvements
• Develop internal tooling and automation (Bazel, CI, testing) to increase engineering velocity
• Partner with product teams to identify infrastructure pain points and emerging needs
• Translate complex constraints into clean, well-documented abstractions and safe APIs
