About this role

OpenAI seeks an Operating Systems Engineer to design and harden OS foundations for consumer AI devices, working across kernel, system services, security, and performance. You'll collaborate with hardware and application teams to deliver production-ready embedded systems that prioritize security, privacy, reliability, and power efficiency.

What you'll do

  • Develop kernel and userspace OS components including scheduling, memory management, filesystems, drivers, and IPC mechanisms
  • Build and maintain core OS services, daemons, and frameworks (init, service management, device discovery, networking, logging)
  • Design and implement security mechanisms: secure boot, mandatory access control, sandboxing, secrets management, and privacy-preserving telemetry
  • Establish performance and power discipline through instrumentation, profiling, and regression detection for boot, latency, and battery life
  • Build debugging and observability tools using tracing, profiling, and crash analysis across kernel and userspace
  • Provide stable platform interfaces for application and UI frameworks including windowing, input pipelines, and graphics stack integration

  • C and C++ for low-level systems development
  • Kernel development (drivers, subsystems, platform enablement)
  • Core OS services and platform software architecture
  • Debugging across kernel/userspace boundaries using tracing and profiling tools
  • OS security fundamentals (isolation, privilege separation, secure IPC)
  • Rust in systems contexts (preferred)
  • OS security hardening (SELinux/AppArmor, seccomp, namespaces, exploit mitigations)
