Software Engineer, Cyber Frontier

Join OpenAI's Cyber team to develop AI-powered security products that help defenders respond to threats while ensuring responsible deployment of frontier models. This hands-on role spans product engineering, model training, evaluations, and safeguards—connecting research with real-world security use cases.

What you'll do

• Define and execute technical roadmap for security products including evaluations, safeguards, and deployment decisions
• Partner with defenders and customers to understand cyber use cases and translate feedback into product priorities
• Shape model training, access patterns, and validation criteria specific to cybersecurity applications
• Build systems to measure cyber capabilities, monitor misuse risk, and validate safeguard effectiveness
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Safety, Research, Security, Legal, and GTM teams on cyber initiatives
• Convert frontier research into launch-ready tools, playbooks, and infrastructure for security products

What they're looking for

• Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, or similar programming languages
• ML systems and model training experience
• Security product development or cybersecurity knowledge
• Evaluation science and testing methodologies
• Ability to navigate ambiguity and think through misuse risk and safeguards
• Experience with trusted customer deployments or high-stakes environments
• Cross-functional collaboration and communication
• Systems thinking about capability, risk, and tradeoffs
