Systems Integration Engineer, Build Systems | Consumer Devices

San Francisco$293k–$325kfulltimemidAdded today

About this role

Build systems engineer responsible for designing and maintaining Bazel-based build infrastructure, CI pipelines, and developer tooling for OpenAI's consumer device software. You'll optimize build performance, test reliability, and developer productivity across a growing polyrepo environment while partnering with engineering teams to reduce friction in the development workflow.

What you'll do

  • Own and evolve Bazel and yocto-based build workflows, including Starlark rules, toolchains, and integrations
  • Improve CI performance and reliability through Buildkite pipeline optimization, caching, and test flake isolation
  • Build systems for affected-target detection, dependency analysis, and intelligent test selection to reduce unnecessary CI work
  • Operate and optimize build infrastructure including Docker, Kubernetes runners, remote caches, and execution systems
  • Instrument build and CI systems with metrics, dashboards, and analytics to measure speed, reliability, and developer impact
  • Partner with teams to understand pain points, debug build failures, and remove systemic bottlenecks; participate in on-call rotation

What they're looking for

  • Bazel and Starlark
  • CI/CD systems and Buildkite
  • Build infrastructure optimization
  • Docker and container technologies
  • Kubernetes and infrastructure orchestration
  • Python or Go for tooling
  • Distributed systems debugging
  • Developer experience and productivity focus

Benefits

  • Hybrid work model with 4 days in-office per week in San Francisco
  • Relocation assistance available
  • Work on critical infrastructure serving a large engineering organization
  • Opportunity to use modern AI tools for CI innovation
  • Impact on developer velocity and product ship speed
