SpaceX
Application Software Engineer, Applied AI
About this role
SpaceX seeks an Application Software Engineer to design and deploy AI systems—including large language models and agentic systems—that power mission-critical applications across the company's launch, production, and Starlink operations. You will own the complete lifecycle of AI products from prototype to production, working cross-functionally to integrate cutting-edge AI capabilities into real-world systems.
What you'll do
- Develop reliable, production-grade AI-powered software solutions that accelerate SpaceX's launch, production, and Starlink operations
- Own the full lifecycle of AI systems: design, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and iteration from prototype to production
- Architect production systems for agentic workflows, tool-use, multi-agent orchestration, and advanced retrieval with emphasis on reliability and safety
- Build and maintain evaluation frameworks and production observability systems to monitor AI quality, safety, latency, and cost
- Uncover high-leverage AI opportunities by deeply understanding user problems and delivering efficient solutions
- Stay current with emerging LLM techniques and rapidly incorporate best practices into production systems
What they're looking for
- LLM deployment and integration (agentic systems, tool-use, multi-agent orchestration, fine-tuning)
- Production AI evaluation and monitoring (LLM-as-judge, A/B testing, red-teaming, observability)
- Full-stack software development and system architecture design
- Python, C#.NET, Go, Scala, or Java programming
- Docker, Kubernetes, and modern data streaming (Kafka)
- Front-end frameworks (Angular, React) and databases (PostgreSQL, SQL Server)
- End-to-end AI product development and productionization
- Software engineering best practices and clean, maintainable code

Likely interview questions
- Walk us through a production AI system you've shipped end-to-end—what were the key challenges in moving from prototype to production and how did you address them?
- How would you design an evaluation framework and monitoring system for an LLM-powered agent that needs to be highly reliable and safe in a production environment?
