About this role

1X is seeking a Materials and Process Innovation Engineer to develop and scale manufacturing processes for advanced soft materials and polymers that enable next-generation humanoid robots. You'll bridge the gap between lab innovations and production-ready manufacturing, ensuring novel material systems perform reliably at scale while maintaining safety and cost-effectiveness.

What you'll do

  • Develop and optimize scalable manufacturing processes for advanced soft materials, polymers, elastomers, composites, and coatings
  • Transition material technologies from laboratory concepts to production-ready workflows
  • Improve process consistency, yield, and product quality through data-driven optimization
  • Establish relationships between material composition, processing conditions, and functional performance
  • Identify and implement manufacturing technologies for next-generation soft and functional materials
  • Collaborate across research, engineering, design, and manufacturing teams

What they're looking for

  • Materials processing and manufacturing science
  • Fabrication techniques (casting, coating, lamination, molding, thermoforming)
  • Experience with polymers, elastomers, composites, textiles, and multilayer systems
  • Material characterization and process validation
  • Experimental design and complex systems optimization
  • Manufacturing scale-up and production engineering
  • Advanced manufacturing techniques (additive manufacturing, 3D printing, photolithography)
  • Cross-functional collaboration
