About this role
Block's Payment Interfaces team is seeking a senior software engineer to design, build, and operate high-volume payment APIs across Square, Cash App, and Afterpay. This hands-on role combines API architecture and system design with ongoing operational responsibility for critical payment infrastructure serving worldwide traffic.
What you'll do
- Design and build customer-facing payment APIs with clear contracts and developer reliability
- Lead complex projects end-to-end from requirements through production deployment and maintenance
- Operate and scale critical payment systems, participate in on-call rotation, and respond to incidents
- Improve system performance, observability, fault tolerance, and security through automation and engineering
- Collaborate with product and engineering partners across Block to translate payment requirements into reusable capabilities
- Mentor teammates through design reviews, code reviews, and documentation while shaping technical direction
