About this role
Fluidstack seeks a senior Protection & Controls Engineer to lead HV/MV power system protection design and operations across rapidly scaling data center campuses. You'll define protection philosophy, review third-party engineering work, and serve as technical escalation for protection events across a gigawatt-scale portfolio.
What you'll do
- Lead protection and control design for HV/MV systems, defining relay protection schemes and standards across capital projects
- Review relay settings, coordination studies, logic diagrams, and IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging from contractors prior to energization
- Own protection coordination across growing sites, evaluating fault duty changes and settings for temporary builds and construction sequencing
- Design substation automation and integration including SCADA point indexes, HMI screens, IED data maps, and operational descriptions
- Investigate protection misoperations and fault events, conducting root cause analysis and implementing fleet-wide corrective actions
- Support implementation, testing, and commissioning while feeding lessons learned into design standards

- SEL relay platforms and other major vendors (ABB Relion, Siemens Siprotec, GE, Schneider/Micom)
- Substation automation and SCADA design
- IEC 61850 and GOOSE messaging protocols
- Fault analysis and event investigation
- RTAC/PLC-based automation and DNP3 (preferred)
- Protection for battery energy storage and inverter-based resources (preferred)
