MatX
System Software Engineer - Linux Kernel and Device Drivers
About this role
MatX is hiring a System Software Engineer to design and implement the Linux kernel driver stack for AI accelerator silicon, from pre-silicon validation through first-silicon bring-up. You'll own the full stack from PCIe device drivers through low-level userspace libraries, optimizing hardware/software interaction on a fast-moving team.
What you'll do
- Architect and implement Linux kernel drivers for PCIe AI accelerators, handling memory management, DMA, interrupts, and command submission
- Build low-level userspace libraries with ioctl/sysfs interfaces and direct chip access utilities
- Validate chip features across pre-silicon platforms (simulation, emulation, FPGA) as first software to interact with new hardware
- Debug hardware/software issues spanning RTL, firmware, kernel, and userspace during first-silicon bring-up
- Profile and optimize the host I/O path including PCIe throughput, DMA efficiency, and interrupt latency
- Write unit tests, regression tests, and prototype debug utilities; expose device telemetry to platform management
What they're looking for
- Linux kernel device driver development (8+ years low-level systems experience)
- C programming in both userspace and kernel contexts
- PCIe device programming and hardware datasheet interpretation
- Computer architecture fundamentals (MMIO, DMA, interrupts, IOMMU, virtual memory)
- Hardware/software debugging with limited visibility
- Pre-silicon validation (simulation, emulation, FPGA prototyping)
- Kernel performance profiling tools (perf, ftrace, eBPF)
- Systems design and ownership from specification to validation
Benefits
- Equity compensation with flexible mix
- Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and life insurance with company subsidies
- Pre-tax HSA with generous company contribution
- 4 weeks paid time off plus 12 company holidays
- 3 weeks remote/flex work policy
- Work on cutting-edge AI silicon at a well-funded startup
