OpenAI
Research Engineer / Research Scientist, Health
About this role
OpenAI's Health team seeks a research engineer or scientist to develop frontier AI capabilities for healthcare applications. You'll own research problems end-to-end across pretraining, reinforcement learning, and evaluations, working to make high-quality medical intelligence accessible to patients and clinicians at scale.
What you'll do
- Own high-leverage research directions from problem identification through model integration, deciding what matters and how to measure it
- Develop scalable methods across pretraining, midtraining, RL, and post-training to improve health reasoning, knowledge, reliability, and calibration
- Build and study RL environments grounded in real health problems to ensure robust, generalizable improvements
- Create meaningful evaluations that determine whether models genuinely improve outcomes for patients and clinicians
- Advance 0→1 health capabilities that scale with increasing model intelligence and test-time compute
- Collaborate with researchers, engineers, clinicians, and product teams to deploy health capabilities into widely-used products
What they're looking for
- Machine learning research and deep technical expertise in pretraining, reinforcement learning, or evaluation design
- Hands-on experimental design, coding, debugging, and rapid iteration from hypothesis to evidence
- Biomedical AI or healthcare domain knowledge (beneficial but not required)
- Ability to work with longitudinal and multimodal health data
- Research taste and problem prioritization in ambiguous settings
- End-to-end ownership with focus on real-world impact and scalability
- Collaboration across research, engineering, and clinical disciplines
- Understanding of clinical workflows and health outcomes measurement
