About this role

OpenAI seeks a Security Software Engineer to design and implement hardware-backed security foundations for device ecosystems, focusing on HSM trust boundaries, cryptographic key protection, and policy enforcement systems. You'll develop security-critical firmware and software spanning HSMs, trusted execution environments, and secure elements, taking projects from requirements through production deployment.

What you'll do

  • Design and implement security-critical software and firmware for HSMs, secure elements, and trusted execution environments
  • Build and harden policy-to-HSM boundaries that authorize certificate issuance and cryptographic signing operations
  • Develop HSM trusted applications, device drivers, SDKs, and cryptographic service integrations like PKCS#11
  • Implement cryptographic protocols and key management systems including provisioning, rotation, and destruction policies
  • Design HSM-backed certificate authorities, code-signing systems, and device-identity infrastructure
  • Create test harnesses, fuzzers, and threat models to validate security properties and failure behavior
