About this role
The Quincy Institute (QI) is seeking a reporter with a high degree of motivation and initiative for its online magazine, Responsible Statecraft.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with a demonstrated ability to break news that can drive the foreign-policy conversation and shine a light on the forces and ideologies that have mired the United States in endless wars. The reporter will work closely with RS’s editorial team to explore unique ways in which RS can expose corruption and hypocrisy in the military industrial complex, as well as on Capitol Hill and the federal government. The reporter will write about the issues that are important to Americans outside the Beltway, too, including military families and veterans, and the economic and health impacts of war on local communities. The reporter will also be expected to cover federal elections as they intersect with foreign policy, and respond to breaking news.
Our reporter will also assist with daily social media and publishing tasks as needed.
Candidates must be dedicated to advancing the mission, vision, and principles of military restraint, and committed to transpartisanship, journalistic integrity, and professionalism. The person selected for this position will report to the Editor-in-Chief and the Managing Editor of Responsible Statecraft.
This is a paid, full-time position, based in Washington, D.C. Candidates will be expected to be in person three days per week, though schedules are flexible. The Quincy Institute offers comprehensive medical and dental insurance, a 401k savings plan, and other benefits, as well as professional development and a friendly and dynamic working environment.
Responsibilities
-
Closely follow the daily and weekly news cycle, tracking issues relevant to our mission and the ongoing foreign policy and national security landscape in Washington, on Capitol Hill, and in the international arena.
-
Cover events and produce a high tempo of original content for RS (both short form “Qiosks” and longer reported pieces, averaging 2-3 weekly).
-
Cultivate sources and break news on a consistent basis.
-
Assist with managing and driving engagements on RS’s social media platforms.
-
Help brainstorm our daily editorial schedule as well as story ideas, long-term reporting projects and special packages.
-
Other tasks, as assigned.
Essential Qualifications
-
Demonstrated background knowledge and interest in key issues related U.S. foreign policy and national security as well as Washington politics.
-
A keen interest in the foreign policy work of the Quincy Institute and the mission of Responsible Statecraft, including familiarity with the international relations theory of realism & restraint and relevant literature.
-
Strong reporting and research skills, and a demonstrated ability to cultivate sources and break news in the foreign policy and national security space.
-
Superior writing skills, with at least 3 years of reporting experience in a professional journalistic setting and familiarity with AP Style.
-
Fluency in driving engagement through social media platforms like X, TikTok, Instagram, and/or LinkedIn.
-
Basic understanding of data analysis and presentation.
-
Ability to work in a fast-paced, non-partisan environment and meet tight deadlines with great attention to detail.
To apply, candidates must submit:
Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, and three published writing samples.
Candidates should submit their application by close of business on November 13, 2026. We will reach out to the candidates that we feel are the best match for our needs via email.
The salary range for this role is $70,000 to $80,000 commensurate with experience. This position is based in Washington D.C. and is not a remote position. Only candidates based in the United States will be considered.
