Redwood Materials
Software Engineer - Site Controller, Energy Storage
About this role
Redwood Materials seeks a Software Engineer to design and implement the Site Controller—the central orchestration system for grid-scale battery energy storage. You'll build scalable, resilient software that coordinates distributed microcontrollers, manages real-time grid interactions, and enables renewable energy baseload capability.
What you'll do
- Design and implement scalable, resilient distributed system architecture for the Site Controller to coordinate thousands of microcontrollers with zero downtime
- Develop multi-rate tiered control logic balancing high-level site coordination with real-time grid execution and sub-cycle synchronization
- Architect robust fault-management frameworks and state machines for autonomous error recovery and failsafe modes
- Define deterministic networking layers and communication protocols ensuring low-latency, reliable data flow between site controller and assets
- Integrate hardware abstraction layers to support heterogeneous battery and power electronics across modular BESS platforms
- Collaborate with simulation, controls, and cloud teams to optimize state-of-charge, battery longevity, and grid responsiveness
What they're looking for
- Distributed systems architecture and design
- Real-time control systems and state machine logic
- Low-latency networking and deterministic protocols
- Fault tolerance and resilience engineering
- Hardware abstraction and embedded systems integration
- Grid energy systems or power electronics knowledge
- C/C++ or systems-level programming
- Cloud platform integration (AWS/Azure/GCP)
Benefits
- Work on mission-critical grid infrastructure at GWh scale
- Collaborate with world-class controls and simulation teams
- Shape the digital backbone of the energy transition
- San Francisco location in growing clean energy sector
