About this role

Relay is seeking a Software Engineer Intern to join their Device Team during summer 2027, working on custom Android-based communication devices. You'll contribute across the full stack—from Android application development to Linux OS and embedded firmware—shipping products to real customers every 6 weeks in a fast-growing, hands-on environment.

What you'll do

  • Develop and debug features for Android applications using Kotlin and Java
  • Contribute to OS-level systems programming, including Linux kernel and framework interactions
  • Work on embedded systems and microcontroller firmware development
  • Implement Linux hardware interfaces and device drivers
  • Collaborate with engineers on custom in-house hardware design and integration
  • Participate in full-stack device development with 6-week release cycles

  • C, Java, or Kotlin programming
  • Android or AOSP systems programming
  • Linux systems programming at or below POSIX API layer
  • Embedded systems development (Zephyr, ThreadX, or similar)
  • Bash or Python scripting
  • IP networking concepts (HTTP, TCP/UDP sockets)
  • Linux desktop and server distributions
  • Agile development practices
