About this role

Rocket Lab Robotics seeks a Mechanical Engineer II to design and develop mechanical and electromechanical hardware for space robotics, precision mechanisms, and ground support equipment. You will drive hardware from concept through flight qualification, working across design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing for demanding spaceflight applications.

What you'll do

  • Design precision mechanisms, robotic systems, electromechanical assemblies, tooling, and ground support equipment for space and ground applications
  • Develop mechanical hardware through the full lifecycle: concept, trade studies, detailed design, analysis, drawing release, procurement, assembly, integration, testing, and delivery
  • Create and maintain product definition in SolidWorks including 3D models, production drawings, BOMs, assembly documentation, and design analyses
  • Apply GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, FEA, and first-principles calculations to inform design decisions for stiffness, strength, thermal, vibration, and manufacturability
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, systems, manufacturing, quality, and test teams to evaluate alternatives and deliver build-ready solutions
  • Support hardware assembly, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and coordinate with machine shops and suppliers on fabrication and delivery

What they're looking for

  • SolidWorks CAD and 3D modeling
  • Mechanical design and analysis (GD&T, tolerance stack-up, FEA)
  • Space mechanisms: actuators, gimbals, gear trains, harmonic drives, bearings, release devices
  • Materials selection and manufacturing processes
  • Thermal, vibration, and shock analysis
  • Technical documentation and design reviews
  • Hardware integration and environmental testing
  • Cross-functional collaboration and communication
