SpaceX
Electromagnetic Effects Engineer (Starlink Aviation)
About this role
SpaceX seeks an Electromagnetic Effects Engineer for Starlink Aviation to ensure EMI/EMC compatibility of in-flight connectivity hardware across aircraft and mobile systems. You'll conduct multi-level analysis, testing, and troubleshooting while collaborating with cross-functional teams to solve aviation-specific electromagnetic challenges and support certification efforts.
What you'll do
- Perform electromagnetic analysis and design for lightning effects, grounding architectures, shielding, emissions, and susceptibility across board to system levels
- Characterize and troubleshoot EMI/RF problems from design through field integration, conducting root cause investigations
- Set EMI/EMC requirements based on physics principles and validate systems with EE, ME, DSP, and software teams
- Execute EMI/EMC testing per FAA and MIL standards, document results, and support certification with regulatory authorities
- Operate spectrum analyzers, vector signal analyzers, network analyzers, and other RF test equipment independently
- Question assumptions and apply creative problem-solving while maintaining documentation and quality standards
What they're looking for
- Electromagnetic environmental effects (E3) analysis and design
- EMI/EMC requirements, testing, and troubleshooting
- RF test equipment operation (spectrum analyzers, VSA, VSG, network analyzers)
- Python, C++, C#, or MATLAB programming
- Circuit analysis and schematic/PCB layout interpretation
- MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, FAA DO-160 standards knowledge
- System-level problem-solving with production hardware
- Technical documentation and communication
Benefits
- Long-term incentives including company stock or cash awards
- Discretionary bonuses
- Employee Stock Purchase Plan with discount
- Comprehensive benefits package
- Work on cutting-edge aerospace connectivity technology

Likely interview questions
- Describe a complex EMI/EMC problem you've diagnosed at the system level—what was your approach and what tools did you use?
- How do you approach setting EMI requirements when industry standards may not fully apply to a novel application like aviation satellite connectivity?
