About this role
Position Overview
SteerBridge is seeking a Cloud Engineer to build and operate the AWS GovCloud infrastructure behind a mission-critical Modern Disability Claims platform that supports Veterans and federal customers. This role focuses on the day-to-day engineering of secure, automated cloud environments that host claims intake, processing, and adjudication workloads.
The engineer will work directly with solutions architects, security engineers, data teams, and platform owners to provision infrastructure as code, automate containerized application delivery, and keep production environments reliable, compliant, and observable.
This is a hands-on role. The ideal candidate is comfortable operating containerized workloads on AWS, writes infrastructure as code, automates repetitive operational work, and methodically troubleshoots networking, identity, and compute issues in a regulated cloud.
SteerBridge operates in AWS GovCloud and applies hardened, STIG-aligned baselines and automated CI/CD pipelines to deliver infrastructure that meets federal security and authorization (ATO) expectations. Cloud engineers keep these systems running and continuously improve their automation, resilience, and cost efficiency.
This is a hybrid position based in Vienna, VA.
Key Responsibilties
-
Provision and manage AWS GovCloud infrastructure, including ECS, Fargate, VPC networking, S3, IAM, and ECR, using Terraform and Terragrunt.
-
Build and operate containerized workloads on ECS and Fargate, and maintain CI/CD pipelines, STIG-hardened baselines, and container image pipelines.
-
Monitor production environments with CloudWatch, tune logging, metrics, and alarms to reduce alert noise, and participate in on-call rotation and incident response.
-
Troubleshoot networking, DNS, identity, and compute issues across hub-and-spoke, traffic-inspected environments, and drive improvements in reliability, performance, and cost.
-
Apply least-privilege IAM policies and support zero-trust network access and secure connectivity for application and administrative access.
-
Remediate security findings with the security team and support audit, compliance, and ATO activities with accurate documentation and evidence.
-
Partner with architects and security engineers to implement designs, and participate in design reviews, backlog refinement, and sprint planning.
-
Document infrastructure, runbooks, and automation for the broader team.
-
Eligibility requirements: U.S. citizenship is required for this position under applicable federal contract requirements. Candidate must also be able to obtain and maintain the security clearance required for the role.
-
5+ years of hands-on cloud engineering experience, preferably with AWS, including cloud networking (VPC, subnets, routing, DNS, security groups) and IAM and security fundamentals.
-
Strong experience with infrastructure as code and automation, including Terraform and/or CloudFormation, CI/CD pipelines, and scripting in Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
-
Experience deploying and operating containerized workloads using Docker with ECS, Fargate, or Kubernetes.
-
Experience in AWS GovCloud or other regulated federal environments, such as healthcare, benefits, or claims systems.
-
Familiarity with NIST 800-53, RMF, and federal ATO processes.
-
Experience building container image pipelines (ECR) and STIG-hardened baselines.
-
Experience with zero-trust network access (ZTNA/SASE) and hub-and-spoke network architectures.
-
AWS certifications, such as Solutions Architect Associate or SysOps Administrator.
