About this role
Waymo seeks a Diagnostics Engineer to design and implement diagnostic systems for autonomous vehicle platforms, collaborating across sensing, compute, and actuator subsystems. This hybrid role involves developing troubleshooting infrastructure, analyzing diagnostic gaps, and leading strategy evolution for Waymo's self-driving technology.
What you'll do
- Architect and implement diagnostics infrastructure, tooling, and processes for autonomous and vehicle systems troubleshooting
- Collaborate with subject matter experts across sensing, compute, actuators, and support systems on diagnostics design
- Lead analysis of subsystem diagnostics gaps and prioritize future diagnostic investments
- Drive diagnostics strategy through technical and organizational leadership
- Support deployed systems (hardware and software) troubleshooting in fast-paced environment
- Conduct onsite visits to service centers and manufacturing facilities (~10% travel)

- Diagnostics development for automotive, aerospace, or consumer electronics
- Object-oriented programming (C++, Python, or similar)
- Autonomous vehicle systems (sensors, compute, wiring, power, actuators, chassis communication)
- Automotive diagnostics standards (J1979 OBD-II and modern cloud-connected strategies)
- Passenger vehicle control systems knowledge
- Cross-functional collaboration with technical and non-technical teams
- Rapid learning and breadth across electrical, mechanical, and software domains
- Hands-on experience with deployed hardware and software systems
