About this role

1X is seeking a Chemical Engineer to develop advanced polymer coating materials for load-bearing composites in humanoid robots. You'll lead R&D efforts to design, characterize, and optimize coating formulations that directly impact robot durability, safety, and manufacturability, working closely with cross-functional engineering teams.

What you'll do

  • Design and execute polymer coating formulations for load-bearing composite applications
  • Perform material characterization using DMA, DSC, TGA, FTIR, tensile testing, and microscopy
  • Build structure–property–process–performance models linking coating chemistry to real-world performance
  • Investigate coating and composite failures and implement chemistry-driven improvements
  • Establish laboratory procedures, testing methodologies, and documentation for manufacturing readiness
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and systems engineers to integrate materials into production

What they're looking for

  • Polymer chemistry and formulation science
  • Advanced material characterization techniques (DMA, DSC, TGA, FTIR, rheology)
  • Polymer synthesis and coating processing
  • Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis
  • Adhesion, abrasion, and fatigue testing knowledge
  • Laboratory expertise and chemical safety
  • Cross-functional technical communication
  • Independent research ownership and problem-solving
