Tactile Sensing Research Engineer
About this role
1X Labs seeks a Tactile Sensing Research Engineer to advance humanoid robot perception by developing next-generation tactile sensing systems. You'll design, fabricate, test, and iterate on sensing technologies that capture physical contact dynamics, ultimately enabling NEO robots to safely manipulate objects and interact with home environments.
What you'll do
- Design and fabricate successive generations of tactile sensing systems with measurable performance improvements
- Conduct rigorous experimental testing and benchmarking against human tactile capabilities and competing technologies
- Identify and solve fundamental limitations in sensing architectures, materials, and transduction approaches
- Develop custom experimental setups for sensor characterization and systematic performance validation
- Transition promising tactile sensing concepts into viable integration paths for robotic manipulation systems
- Generate experimental evidence to guide technology selection and research decisions
What they're looking for
- Tactile sensing design and development
- Hands-on prototyping and fabrication
- Experimental design and measurement methodology
- Materials science and mechanics
- Custom electronics and signal processing
- Sensor characterization and benchmarking
- Robotic manipulation systems knowledge
- Problem-solving with limited prior solutions
Benefits
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Generous paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave
- 401(k) with company match (100% on first 3%, 50% on next 2%)
