Benchling
Software Engineer, Tools and Automation
About this role
Benchling seeks a founding Software Engineer for Tools and Automation to build internal systems and AI-powered automation for a biotech AI platform. You'll own technical direction and architecture for internal tooling, work hands-on shipping production code, and partner with cross-functional teams to enable enterprise-grade agentic systems and data infrastructure.
What you'll do
- Define foundational architecture for internal tools, integrations, workflow orchestration, and agentic systems including tool integration and state management
- Write production code at least half your time, standing up CI/CD, testing, and deployment infrastructure leveraging existing company patterns
- Transition departmental prototypes into hardened, production-grade systems with full SDLC rigor and own operational support
- Design systems for enterprise requirements including multi-tenant isolation, secrets management, audit logging, and role-based access controls
- Partner with Security Engineering on threat modeling for internal systems and agentic workflows (prompt injection, tool misuse, data exfiltration risks)
- Lead team ideation, planning, and delivery; drive technical hiring while contributing as individual contributor
What they're looking for
- Backend systems design and architecture
- Production Python or TypeScript development
- CI/CD pipeline design and infrastructure-as-code
- API design and integration patterns
- Security-first development (secrets management, encryption, access controls, audit logging)
- Workflow orchestration and state management
- Experience shipping systems at scale and operational ownership
- Ability to evaluate and integrate AI/LLM tools appropriately
