Software Engineer, Data Platform
About this role
Block is seeking a senior software engineer to design and operate their data platform, enabling teams across the company to work with trusted data at scale. You'll build foundational capabilities in data warehousing, orchestration, governance, and AI workflows while mentoring engineers and partnering with data practitioners.
What you'll do
- Design and build core data platform capabilities including warehousing, orchestration, BI tooling, and governance
- Develop reliable Python services and developer-facing tools for data product creation and operations
- Build scalable infrastructure-as-code using Terraform and establish patterns for petabyte-scale data management
- Partner with data engineers, analysts, scientists, and product teams to translate requirements into platform capabilities
- Evaluate and implement agentic workflows while maintaining appropriate controls and observability
- Set technical direction, raise engineering standards, and mentor other engineers on the team
What they're looking for
- Senior-level Python development and production systems design
- Data platform architecture and large-scale data infrastructure experience
- Snowflake, Databricks, or comparable modern data platforms
- Terraform and infrastructure-as-code practices
- Apache Airflow, dbt, and data orchestration tools
- Understanding of petabyte-scale data tradeoffs: performance, cost, reliability, governance
- Technical leadership and cross-team collaboration
- AWS cloud experience
