Software Engineer - Risk
About this role
Cardless is seeking a senior Risk Engineer to build and own the fraud decisioning infrastructure that authorizes transactions and provisions cards. You'll migrate fraud logic from third-party vendor platforms into a controlled, testable system with real-time detection and kill switches, working directly with Risk and Fraud Operations teams.
What you'll do
- Design and build the risk decisioning layer for card authorization and mobile wallet provisioning
- Migrate fraud logic from vendor platforms into a versioned, testable control plane with shadow mode and staged rollouts
- Develop real-time detection and alerting for velocity, cross-provisioning, device signals, and active attacks
- Gate servicing changes (address, phone, email, reship) behind risk evaluations
- Build and ship tools that fraud analysts use daily for monitoring and investigation
- Maintain incident response capabilities with fast kill switches and blast radius awareness

- Backend systems design and production deployment (6+ years)
- Fraud, payments risk, or trust and safety engineering
- Decisioning services, rules engines, real-time scoring, step-up orchestration
- Distributed systems and API fundamentals
- Modern backend languages (Java primary, Python for data)
- Card issuing and auth-time decisioning (bonus)
- Account takeover and step-up authentication mechanisms (bonus)
- Experience at risk or identity vendors (bonus)
