Founding Software Engineer
About this role
A Y Combinator–backed insurtech startup seeks a Founding Software Engineer to own end-to-end platform development for AI agents automating claims operations. You'll architect core infrastructure, build reliability and evaluation systems, and ship production features weekly on a small, high-agency team.
What you'll do
- Own entire platform components end-to-end, from evaluation pipelines and model reliability to document parsing and agent execution
- Build reliability systems including retries, circuit breakers, failover, observability, and canary deployments
- Design and ship an evaluation platform that detects regressions before customers encounter them
- Collaborate with forward-deployed engineers to spec and rapidly ship solutions based on customer feedback
- Shape developer platform tooling, CI/CD workflows, and coding agent integrations to increase team velocity
- Maintain production systems handling voice, email, and file-based workflows in regulated insurance environments
What they're looking for
- TypeScript (primary production language)
- SQL and PostgreSQL
- AWS or GCP infrastructure and deployment
- REST API design and backend architecture
- Vector databases and document processing
- Docker and containerization
- AI/LLM agent infrastructure and orchestration
- System reliability and observability patterns
Benefits
- Equity in a well-funded, high-growth Y Combinator startup
- On-site role in Los Angeles with consideration for NYC and San Francisco candidates
- Relocation support available for qualified candidates
- High-agency role with true end-to-end ownership and autonomy
- Early-stage team environment with direct customer and product impact
