About this role

Defense Unicorns seeks a Mid to Senior Software Engineer to design and build cloud-native data pipelines and modernize legacy on-premises systems for the U.S. Navy. You'll own end-to-end project delivery, mentor engineers, and drive architectural best practices across microservices and distributed systems.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, and maintain complex ETL/ELT workflows and data pipelines using cloud-native tools
  • Translate ambiguous requirements into technical solutions by partnering with data architects, analysts, and stakeholders
  • Refactor on-premises systems into distributed, cloud-based microservices with lightweight APIs
  • Implement security protocols including authentication, authorization, RBAC/ABAC frameworks, and data governance
  • Drive best practices in microservice design, testing, observability, CI/CD automation, and code quality
  • Provide technical mentorship, lead architectural discussions, and influence product direction through deep system understanding

What they're looking for

  • Expert proficiency in modern programming languages (Go, TypeScript, Python)
  • System design and API development (RESTful, FastAPI, ASP.NET, or equivalent)
  • Database design, schema optimization, indexing, and query performance tuning
  • Workflow orchestration (Argo Workflows preferred) and Kubernetes (Controllers, Operators, CRDs)
  • Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and cloud-native architecture
  • Authorization, identity management, and data governance implementation
  • Microservice decomposition and monolith-to-distributed system migration
  • Technical communication and stakeholder collaboration across all levels
