About this role
Discord is seeking a backend Software Engineer to build and scale safety infrastructure for content moderation and harmful content detection across their platform. You'll work on distributed systems handling millions of users, collaborate with Trust & Safety and ML teams, and participate in on-call operations for mission-critical systems.
What you'll do
- Scale and improve Discord's content review and detection systems for harmful material
- Build and maintain production services operating at massive scale with on-call participation
- Apply adversarial thinking to identify security vulnerabilities, abuse scenarios, and edge cases
- Collaborate with Trust & Safety, ML, Policy, and product teams to define and deliver solutions
- Debug complex multi-service codebases and navigate distributed system challenges
- Contribute to observability, monitoring, and metrics for large-scale safety infrastructure

- Backend software engineering (3+ years professional experience)
- Python or similar languages
- Distributed systems design and operation
- Cloud platforms (GCP or AWS)
- Production debugging and troubleshooting
- Cross-functional collaboration and communication
- Content moderation or trust & safety domain knowledge (bonus)
- Observability and monitoring at scale (bonus)
