Materials Engineer: Metal Additive Manufacturing
About this role
HRL Laboratories seeks a Materials Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team developing metal additive manufacturing processes for aerospace applications on an America Makes funded project. You'll operate laser powder bed fusion systems, design and fabricate prototype components, characterize materials using advanced techniques, and contribute to cutting-edge structural and functional materials research.
What you'll do
- Operate laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) metal 3D printers and additive manufacturing equipment
- Design, model in CAD, and fabricate prototype components using additive and conventional machining techniques
- Characterize 3D printed materials through pycnometry, X-ray computed tomography, metallography, and microscopy
- Conduct mechanical testing to evaluate tensile strength, fatigue life, and other material properties
- Coordinate with external vendors for specialized testing and analyses
- Document findings and present results in technical reports and presentations
