DoorDash USA
Software Engineer, Storage - Distributed Caching
About this role
Design and operate distributed caching systems at massive scale, including Redis/Valkey clusters, KVRocks-based key-value stores, and lock services that handle hundreds of millions of requests per second across DoorDash, Wolt, and Deliveroo. You'll evolve these systems for cost efficiency and performance while building self-serve tooling and smart client libraries that abstract complexity for internal teams.
What you'll do
- Own provisioning and evolution of caching backends (ElastiCache, Boulder, Entity Cache) serving billions of operations daily
- Design and implement sharding, compaction, replication, and failover mechanisms for distributed caching infrastructure
- Re-platform Distributed Lock Service onto a strongly consistent backend with sharding and failover
- Build self-serve recommendation engines that match customer workloads to optimal caching backends
- Diagnose and resolve production issues (invalidation storms, replication lag, hot shards) and convert them into durable guardrails
- Develop standardized smart client libraries that embed failover, retry, and observability for internal consumers
What they're looking for
- Go or Java/Kotlin with deep expertise in concurrency and distributed systems
- Hands-on experience with Redis, Valkey, Memcached, or similar caching technologies
- Distributed systems fundamentals: consistency models, sharding, replication, consensus
- KVRocks, RocksDB, or similar embedded storage engine tuning and operation
- Capacity planning and cost optimization at scale
- Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure operations
- Proficiency with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor)
- Production debugging and observability tool expertise
